Responsibilities and Tasks:

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Responsible for defining functional solutions (user stories)
  • Clarify requirements for the Solution, including priorities (Requirements Engineering)
  • Responsible for translation from subject to solution
  • Leading workshops with the product owner and domain experts
  • Responsible for solution sketches and functional solution design; engage interaction designers continuously in areas where functional needs are revealed.
  • Assist Test and QA Lead in finding relevant test areas (risk areas)
  • Assist the product owner in prioritizing scope by organizing weekly backlog grooming
  • Contribute in defining and developing functional methodology across teams
  • Keep up to date on relevant methodologies, technology and architecture patterns
  • Coach other functional architects in their work

General: Know the solution well (both model, functionality, intention)

  • Assisting with the business cases
  • Construct workflow charts and diagrams
  • Improve systems by studying current practices and identify new solutions
  • Develop user story maps
  • Performing requirements analysis
  • Translate requirements to actionable software developer tasks
  • Requirements management and communication
  • Assist test activities
  • Assist product owner with weekly backlog grooming


  • Be responsible for the dialogue with the product owner around the solution
  • Keep track of contacts (who knows what etc)
  • Be a sparring partner for testers and developers, follow them up
  • Provide knowledge sharing regarding the functionality and modeling of the solution


  • Involve other key roles when needed (such as interaction designer, technical lead)
  • Collaborate with Technical Lead - Product (and Functional Architect in the Project, if any). Test and QA Lead should be involved when required or if the Functional Architect per product has the role of Test Manager for the product.

Keep an overview of:

  • The functional solution
  • Side effects of changes
  • System platforms
  • Functional requirements
  • Progression of the development of functionality

Qualifications and Personal Qualities:

  • Software development experience, preferable as scrum master and/or as a developer
  • Knowledge of different architectural patterns
  • Experience in information modeling / data modeling / process modeling
  • Experience in defining and assessing business needs and requirements
  • Thrives when translating business needs into software solutions.
  • Enjoys building and maintaining relationships between business units and product developer teams
  • Good at identifying business needs and requirements in a structured way using interviews, workshops, etc.
  • Able to host and facilitate workshops and drive progress
  • A life longlearner!
